About
Hey friends. I'm Nicole. I'm Texas-born and mostly Texas-raised, and I use They/She pronouns. After finishing my BA in Communication at Trinity University in San Antonio, I worked at a rape crisis center for many years. It was hard to leave my friends there, but wanting to support the cause through scholarship, I followed a beloved mentor to the University of Colorado Boulder. Completing my MA there showed me just how much I love the field. In August (2016), I moved to Chapel Hill to pursue my doctorate in Communication. It was an illuminating experience, where I decided that I wasn't willing to compromise my values to complete a program.
I'm still figuring out what it means on a daily level to say that I'm committed to living daily as a scholar-activist, but my commitment doesn't waver. In my work, I study how people use violence as a form of communication. Currently, I'm motivated & excited that study of self-expression might allow individuals to see taking risks with nonviolent communication as an opportunity, as opposed to a threat. Notably, I'm also upset by and curious about the lack of language resources taught for consent.
I'd love to talk about my projects or yours!
